This town is located in the district of Kangra and also served to be the district head quarter of Kangra.  Dharamshala is  located in the lap of Daula Dhar ranges.  Earlier Dharamshala was mooted to be the summer capital of British raj, but after the earthquake of 1905 the plan was rejected.

The earthquake had flattened the landscape of Dharamshala town.  When the town has flourished again it has gone divided in two parts upper Dharamshala and lower Dharamshala. Upper Dharamshala is the hilliest segment of the town consist of Naddi village and Mcleodganj. Lower Dharamshala is more developed to be active as a more flourished town with Government offices, Banks, and Bus Stand.

Dharamshala is also prominent to be the home of Dalai Lama. Dalai Lama is the political and spiritual leader of Tibetans. Many people including a large number of foreigners visit Dharamshala only to meet Dalai Lama. Their views on various topics and lifestyle have been highly admired by the world.

How to Reach Dharamshala

Dharamshala is easily accessible hill station with a proper connectivity with an airport, the railways station, and road transport. It is the only hill station nearby the largest airport of Himachal Pradesh located at Gaggal.

Dharamshala by Air

Dharamshala can be easily accessed by air by landing at the airport of Gaggal. Airport is located just 11 km from Dharamshala. A taxi can be hired to reach upper and lower Dharamshala from Gaggal airport.

Dharamshala by railways

Dharamshala nearest railways station are located at Chakki Bank and Pathankot. These railways station are broad gauge railways station and  trains arrive from all the cities of India to these railways station. Distance between Pathankot and Dharamshala is 83 km.

Dharamshala by road

Dharamshala can be easily accessed from the capital by Volvo bus services available alternatively, it can be reached from Dalhousie, Pathankot, Manali and Shimla by a well-maintained road to the city.

Triund is famous picnic spot near Dharamshala located 20 kilometers ahead from Mcleodganj. Triund can be reached using a trekking route of 9 km from Mcleodganj. Snow lines of Dauladhar range start from 5 km ahead from Triund.

Dal Lake

Dal Lake is located in upper Dharamshala area. It is located 5 km ahead from Mcleodganj. The Lake is located amid the fragrant Himalayan fauna of Dharamshala. A trekking route from Mcleodganj is also available to Dal Lake.


Mcleodganj is the key attraction of upper Dharamshala. Mcleod ganj is the place where a lot of Tibetan lives. Mcleodganj has many Tibetan restaurants to enjoy a variety of Tibetan food. The clean streets and lifestyle of Tibetan people are the main attraction of Mcleodganj. Travelers can shop Tibetan handicraft, hand woven clothes and many of unique gift items of Tibetan culture.

Bhagsunag temple is located 11 km ahead from the bus stand of lower Dharamshala. A small restaurant is also available here to have refreshment. 2 km ahead from the Bhagsunag temple a beautiful eye soothing waterfall is located.
